Set a Deadline, Then Turn It Off

We understand the influx of deadlines that come along with the end of the year (we can relate!). It's easy for us to say "don't stress!" which sounds great in theory but is impossible in reality. So instead, we want to encourage you to do several things:

  • Determine what actually has an EOY deadline, and what would just be nice to have completed before the year closes. These are not in fact the same. Focus your efforts on the MUST items and, in the event you find yourself with time to spare, then move on to the next list.

  • Time block your calendar. We have talked about this before, and we bring it up again because it works! Block off large chunks of time on your calendar (especially if your calendar is visible to others) and make it known that you are busy during those times. This is your GRIND time. Put your head down and work on that task - and only that task - until the time block ends.

  • Make a few sacrifices early in the month so that you can (hopefully) enjoy a lighter load later in the month. Work a few nights undisturbed by emails and a ringing phone. Say no to a group lunch to allow time to hyper-focus on the task(s) at hand.

  • When you've submitted the project, report, budget or final whatever, be done. Allow yourself the freedom to log off and leave work at work. This time of year only comes around every 12 months, so enjoy it!
