In the recent article from Law360.com, Is A Never-Ending Bonus Season The New Norm For BigLaw?, Aebra Coe asked Society 54’s Co-Founder, Jill Huse, to share her thoughts on why firms are handing out an influx of bonuses.

Another big reason for the influx of bonuses, according to consulting firm Society 54 co-founder Jill Huse, is the need for a retention tool not only to combat a hot lateral market, but also to counteract feelings of disconnection that have grown with attorneys largely working from home.

"Because of our virtual lives, firms are finding it increasingly difficult to stay connected to one another, further eroding the trust that comes with building those collegial relationships that often happen when we are all face to face," Huse said.

It's also a more appealing option for law firms than simply raising base pay, Huse pointed out, because there isn't the ongoing commitment of raises.

"When they raise salaries, it's more permanent. Firms like having the flexibility of using this as a lever that they can control," she said. "I believe that this is merely a retention strategy that firms are using to retain their talent that they've invested in."
