There's More to Getting Hired Than Great Experience
Experience is usually one of the first things we look for when we have vacant roles, and it’s also one of the first things attorneys lead with when they’re trying to get hired. There’s no question that solid experience is a big piece of the puzzle. But don’t forget to consider the other factors that are essential to someone when they’re seeking counsel: initiative, determination and personality.
Initiative. People need to know that the person they’re hiring to help with legal needs is going to not only do what’s being asked, but will also look for ways to improve on processes, eliminate future headaches and keep an eye on the big picture.
Determination. Nobody wants to work with (or completely trusts) someone that gets defeated at the first sign of a roadblock? They need someone with the determination that it takes to look for ways around (or over or through) those roadblocks.
Personality. Every individual can’t (and, let’s be real, shouldn’t) be the life of the party. More importantly, people want to work with others that are a good fit with the existing dynamics and culture.
Get creative when thinking through how to put yourself out there for new business. Certainly vet and tout that experience, but remember that there’s more to consider organizations and individuals are looking for the RIGHT fit (instead of simply a warm body) for the long haul.
