"Giving Associates a Voice" article quoting Huse
Jill Huse was recently quoted in Law 360's "The Perks Of Giving Associates A Voice In Firm Management" by Aebra Coe Law360, Grand Rapids (June 19, 2017, 2:28 PM EDT) -- Allowing associates a voice in law firm management could give those looking to attract and retain top talent a leg up. Midsize law firm Barclay Damon LLP recently ushered in its “next generation committee” and released information detailing management changes it has implemented as a result of recommendations made by its associates through feedback sessions and through the committee: the option to telecommute two days a week, a backup child care reimbursement policy, changes to its associate compensation system, and a more relaxed dress code.
Legal recruiters and law firm management consultants say the move to involve associates in management is a step in the right direction, one not many law firms have taken, but perhaps more should as they look to compete for the best talent in a competitive legal market.
Giving associates a voice in the firm’s management policies is not only wise, but can also give them a leg up in recruiting and retaining talent, according to Jill Huse, a partner at consulting firm Society 54 LLC.
“These folks are the future generation that will be leading the firm, and it’s imperative that they have a voice in what their future looks like,” Huse said. “This will help immensely with retention and inclusion. Until firms start opening the dialogue for discussions around change, asking their attorneys what kind of firm they want and allowing those answers to impact strategy, lateral moves will continue to be on the rise.”
