Huse Comments in Law360 Article on Attorney Layoffs in Recession
Law360 recently published an article entitled, “How Attorney Layoffs Could Play Out In The Next Recession.” In the article, Jill Huse suggests how firms will approach these decisions, and how attorneys at various levels of their careers may be impacted.
Jill is quoted in the article regarding associates, “[Law firms will] be thinking about keeping the associates who have the ability to build a practice. It’s not only those who work hard, but those that have the soft skills to develop business. If law firms have to make those tough choices, they’re going to keep the ones that can help them rebound post-recession.”
Later in the article, Jill addresses how firms are likely to approach partner layoffs.
“Huse said law firms are also looking at weeding out underperforming equity partners on an ongoing basis, rather than waiting until there is a crisis. That helps avoid the need for sudden, mass layoffs, she said. ‘In 2007 and 2008, I think there was more loyalty to those partners and finding a way to keep them at the equity status. But I think law firms now are starting to think more like businesses and making those tough decisions when they have to,’ Huse said.”
